Highlights from 2008

Junior Families Evening

We had a great turnout for the evening.

 Senior Swimming Sports

We had a fantastic day for our senior school swimming sports last Thursday. The children were all in full song cheering for their waka and supporting each other. We have been thrilled with the children’s swimming progress this season and this was evident to all those who attended.  Congratulations to all the children and support provided from friends and families.  The waka results for the day were:

Tainui                        476                              Tokomaru                 466

Mataatua                   460                               Aotea                        449

Te Arawa                   421                              Takatimu                  410

Rooms 5 and 6 Trip

Rooms 5 and 6 visited the Phillip's farm and completed sketches of the landscape.

Junior Beach Trip

Our junior classes beach trip was a great success.  Thanks to all our families for their support on the day. Lots of language work was displayed and the great photographs tell their own stories.

I liked going on the bus to the beach.  I made a sandcastle.  We had a feather and leaves and sticks for the bridge.  I liked going on the wobbly bridge and I liked hopping on it wobbling.

I made a sandcastle.  It looked like a castle that people live in.  We dug a hole and the hole was deep.  I liked walking down the rocks.  I saw the big feathers.  By Imelda Birss 5 yrs

 Pond Study

Rms 15 and 16 (Yr 3s) had a fantastic day out at the pond on Peter and Vicki Phillips’s farm.  The children explored pond life (caught no fish!) and flew the kites they made.  Everyone loves their day on the farm.  Thanks again to Peter and Vicki.

Open Day

We had a fairly successful day on Friday.  We were pleased to see so many visitors who enjoyed their visit and the displays which the children had organized as part of their studies.  Special thanks to our PTA and their supporters who looked after the food and lunches.

Art Exhibition

A number of children had their ‘Impressions from the Past’ sketches displayed in the Morrinsville College Hall.  We were allocated a limited display space and selected a range of work from children at various levels across the school.  This art display was a Morrinsville Centenary Art exhibition.

Ngahinapouri Netball Tournament

Congratulations to the Ngahinapouri Netball Tournament team, who won the Year 5 A grade in the tournament at Minogue Park in Hamilton.  They played 5 games and won them all.  They scored 49 points during the day and thanks to the whole team’s awesome defence had only 11 points scored against them.  They won a cap and Mizone drink each and a drink bottle holder and gear bag for the team.  Thanks to Jackie McDonald and Wendy Pulman who umpired our games for us.  This tournament was an excellent experience for the girls and they are all keen as mustard to enter again next year!

Rugby and Netball Fun Day

We had a very successful Harcourts MPS Rugby Netball Fun Day.  The weather was ideal and all the teams’ managers reported positively on the event.  The various groups involved ensured that the event ran smoothly.  The PTA committee and the support team did a tremendous job ensuring all the teams got their lunches and their sausage sizzle and the Kiwanis van enjoyed good patronage.  All in all it was a brilliant day and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Lincoln

Sadly I have to report that Lincoln was put to sleep during the term break.  Lincoln has been part of our school for over 15 years and has been a great friendly cat to the children.  He has been a bit of an institution about the place though he retired from catching mice many years ago!

Rooms 1 and 2 Healthy Food

Ms Watling has responsibility for overseeing changes to our Canteen menu.  She is working with her classroom and Rm1 children in investigating nutrition and healthy eating.  The Year 5 children done an amazing job with their research.  On Friday last as part of their focus on nutrition the children put their thinking hats on and came up with creative and practical ways to improve the image of healthy food in our school.  They were very thorough.  They surveyed school children, designed new menus and proposed new ways the canteen could be transformed into a healthy house as it was nicknamed.  The busy thinkers also made fruit kebabs and lemon juice in order to discover the pros and cons of how practical making healthy food snacks might be.

Tip of the Week: Why not pack an extra sandwich in your lunch box instead of filling it up with expensive packet treats.  It will keep you fuller longer and cost Mum less.  From Rooms 1 and 2.

Family Festive Evening

We had a great turnout for the evening.  Thanks to all the families who supported the night.

School End of Year Awards

At yesterday’s assembly children were presented with certificates for Road Wardens, Banking Monitors, 100% attendance and Class Awards for Excellent in Sport, in Citizenship and in Academic Excellence.  We congratulate all those who achieved the awards and we recognized a great group of other children who were in the reckoning for each award.  Teachers had shortlists of between 5-8 children for each award so their selection tasks were not made easy.  Children should still put their hand up in 2009 and do the best they can.
